(Part 1)
10. Fish
Fish are a popular choice for cat owners, and the pet food industry knows it. Look at any brand, even the higher quality ones, and you’ll see a dozen different fish-based formulas being produced by them.
Unfortunately, many of these use marine fish as the main ingredient(s). Why is this unfortunate? Marine fish are naturally high in iodine and, due to pollution, are widely contaminated with chemicals and heavy metals.
The high levels of chemicals, heavy metals, and iodine in these fish means cats regularly fed fish-based foods are at a higher risk of developing hyperthyroidism.
This is not to say cats can’t be fed fish or fish-based foods on occasion, though! Just be conscious of what type you’re feeding and remember that moderation is key.
11. Outdoor Cats
This is a rather controversial subject, I’m only going to touch upon it here - for more information and discussion go to catsindoors. Alright, that being said…
Cats should not be permitted unsupervised, unrestricted time outdoors. A cat-proof outdoor enclosure is acceptable, as is taking them for a walk on a harness and leash, but permitting them free reign to go where they want when they want isn’t alright.
As a domestic breed our pet cats have no place in the outdoors of any environment, they are an invasive species and cause massive damage to local ecosystems with their predation. Additionally, which may even more concerning to you as a pet owner, is the dangers an outdoor cat is exposed to.
